Poor electricity users subsidising better off
IT was sad to read Aideen Sheehan's report (Irish Independent, April 16) on the decision by the ESB to go ahead with its plan to introduce discriminatory charges.
This move gives cheaper power to the wealthiest and, in effect, uses higher unit charges levied on the poorest to subsidise that. All those people, including pensioners, who cannot access a bank account are simply excluded from the so-called price cutting plan, as are those who cannot maintain an arrears-free account.
The introduction of so-called "competition" has been exposed here for what it is, a sham.
