Politics still tied to parish pump

If Ireland is to have any hope of survival, we, as a people, need a radical change in our attitude to the role and purpose of our elected politicians.
For too long, politicians were elected on the basis of long-held family loyalties to civil war parties.
This has been very gradually superseded by narrow, local considerations -- we must have our man/woman in a position of power to ensure that our area gets new roads, Lottery funding, a new school building, or its hospital retained.
