Pointless Irish lessons

Sir -- Emer O'Kelly's article on the Irish language brought back a personal memory of an experience that happened to me in 1957.
At the time, I was living in New York and my story concerns a series of job interviews I had in the Rockefeller Center with a company then called 'Standard Oil of New Jersey' and at the Esso headquarters (a subsidiary of Standard) in Pelham, New York.
At that time, Standard Oil was the biggest oil company in the world. The job was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
