Sir - Like all fans of our great game, I read (and watched) with fierce interest and sincere disappointment about Colm Cooper's announcement to hang up his boots.

From all the way in the States, I can assure you the news rang through the Irish community like the plague. I've spent the last week pondering on the massive outcry and am struggling to remember when a GAA retirement so rocked our country and our people. And I can't.

I've also spent the last few weeks pondering why, and after watching Joe Brolly - everyone's favourite, dare-to-be-different pundit - grapple with the eulogy as he so publicly called it, I felt compelled to explain it from the layman's point of view for him.
