Play up and play the game, Leo
I CANNOT believe my ears. Our new Minister for Sport, Leo Varadkar, was asked, on Morning Ireland yesterday, if he had any interest in sport. His answer: "Ah ya, I've been to a few rugby matches and played a bit of cricket when I was young." This is like the Minister for Health admitting that he took an aspirin all by himself, or the Minister for Finance revealing that he once owned a piggy bank.
While I have huge respect for Mr Varadkar, might I suggest that he get hold of a copy of Eamon Sweeney's magnificent article about Sligo Rovers FAI Cup triumph last season (back page of Sunday Independent Sports section on the Sunday after the cup final), or engage Mick Wallace in conversation about the “beautiful game”, or read any of the many excellent autobiographies written by Irish sports people in recent years.
