Plaudits for back page
Sir -- Many times I have been tempted to write in praise of your back page sports writers who have been consistently brilliant over a long period of time. A few weeks ago Eamon Sweeney wrote beautifully about darts, a game usually ignored by the sports media.
Then along came Tommy Conlon with his tribute to Bill McLaren. It's not the first time Tommy has scaled the journalistic heights. I fondly recall articles about Cormac McAnallen, another about a basketball play-off game that was turned around with only fractions of a second remaining; and to illustrate his versatility, a lovely tribute to John McGahern. Thanks, Tommy.
