Pilgrims are 'irresponsible'

Sir -- Many people took part in the 'Reek Sunday' climb on Croagh Patrick because they enjoy the challenge. Many others, however, did so in the belief that the discomfort and pain they suffer will stand them in good stead with their maker.

Yet most would agree the god they are trying to please would disapprove of deliberate self-harm to achieve that end. So, why do so many people persist with this practice?

Elderly and infirm pilgrims who put their lives and the lives of others at risk on the slopes of an unforgiving mountain are acting irresponsibly.
