Pedestrians now at risk

Sir -- One of the reasons cited for the introduction of a 30km per hour speed limit in Dublin is to encourage more people to use bicycles.

That may be good for the environment. However, one of the negative consequences will be even more cyclists using footpaths at great risk to pedestrians. Recently I was lucky to escape injury when leaving a shop in Wicklow Street as a man, availing of the new Dublin Bikes Programme, came speeding down the footpath. If his bike had had a registration number, at least I could have reported the matter to the Garda. However, that might have been a bit unfair as so many cyclists feel free to behave in the same way with impunity.
