Paying a price for losing values

One of the things I missed most during many years spent working in the US was Christmas.
Americans, always unfailingly polite at this time of the year, erred on the far side of political correctness by wishing each other "Happy Holidays." In a multi-layered society they sought not to give offence to non-Christians.
The irony, of course, is that 'holiday' comes from the old English 'haligdæg' or 'holy day'. So, for all their treading carefully, they were still wide of the mark in seeking to bestow a secular good wish.
