YES, Martina Devlin (Irish Independent, November 11), Ireland most certainly is dogged by the parish pump mentality. I knew a Fianna Fall councillor in a small area whose claim to fame was that he organised a lottery to raise money to build a church (as if Ireland was short of churches). His seat had been passed on from his father.
He would make prison visits to the farthest reaches of the country to work up mileage. When I quizzed him on his personal political beliefs, he'd just give me a blank stare!
