'Paddy whackery' gig was a real turn-off
I have watched a lot of the coverage of Queen Elizabeth's visit to our country. I have enjoyed the coverage of her visits to the Garden of Remembrance, Islandbridge, Croke Park and Dublin Castle. I was heartened by her speech and that of our own President Mary McAleese. We are indeed 'family' and it's about time we all realised it.
All of this good feeling has evaporated. I have just watched about three minutes of the concert given for the queen's visit. If I saw this on a London stage, I would condemn it immediately as paddywhackery and stage 'Oirishness'.
The Chieftains playing a decent bit of Irish music was destroyed by a soloist singing in a language I could not identify, with an accent I was unable to place.
