Orphanages not the answer for children

Having worked with missionaries across Africa, I agree that the majority are committed, decent people (Letters, May 26) and are doing excellent work in helping vulnerable people.
My argument is that orphanages, regardless of whether they are run by religious or secular people, are not the best long-term solution for children.
Without appropriate safeguards, they are an environment which potentially leaves children vulnerable to abuse.
