On our knees after 800 years

Sir -- We were once a resilient people. Eight hundred years of oppression failed to subdue an indomitable spirit. Having survived Penal Laws, we had to endure rule by Canon Law. That too had us on our knees, but also failed to keep us there.

What could not be achieved by centuries of oppression was accomplished in a few years by the crass incompetence of our Government and the triumph of greed.

Those we elected and the grotesque money mandarins they coupled have succeeded in crushing the hopes of a once proud and independent people.
