Olympic medals

Madam --I was interested to read the piece (Sunday Independent, May 13, 2012)on Irish artist John Keating being selected for the Art Olympiad being held to celebrate the London Olympics.

What is not widely known is that an Irish artist actually won a medal at the Olympics in days gone by. Starting at the Stockholm Olympics in 1912 and finishing at the previous London Olympics (1948), medals were awarded for works of art that were inspired by sport. And in Paris in 1924, Jack B Yeats won a silver medal for his iconic painting The Liffey Swim which hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland The medal itself forms part of the Yeats archive, which was donated by Anne Yeats to the National Gallery of Ireland in 1996.
