Obama, one year on, still to deliver

On January 21, 2009, you published my letter in which, while sceptical, I expressed the hope that things would change with the new US president, Barack Obama. Since then, the US has created a new baby called Surge, with 130,000 troops offloaded to Afghanistan, many through neutral Shannon.

Tomorrow is the first anniversary of the inauguration of Mr Obama and the best laid plans of mice and men often come unstuck.

A recent newspaper cartoon illustrated and commented that what the US Haiti aid effort was encountering was like what it had left behind in some countries it had supposedly been trying to help.
