No-strike clause a dangerous path
I NOTE that Transport Minister Noel Dempsey is contemplating having all air traffic controllers (ATCs) covered under a legally binding "no strike" clause similar to that which applies to members of An Garda Siochana as they are to be viewed as essential to the running of the State.
This is a dangerous road to go down. When this dispute is settled, as it will be eventually, what will happen in a few years time when a genuine dispute arises? One only has to look at how the gardai are treated. They are not allowed to be involved in discussions on national pay agreements, yet are expected to take what is given to them, and are not allowed strike.
If an employer is not treating its employees properly, they, just like journalists and all other employees in the workplace, should have the right to strike.
