Nobody wants to steal jobs

Published 06/03/2011 | 05:00

Sir -- I refer to 'Plenty of jobs for Irish citizens' (Sunday Independent, February 27). While I agree that many workers in pubs, restaurants, hotels, etc are 'foreigners', I fail to understand how this means there are jobs for young Irish people. Does Brian McAllister from Lisburn propose that we fire all these 'foreigners' because we want their jobs?

I graduated as a radiation therapist and luckily have a job, albeit a temporary one. Many of my classmates, however, were forced to emigrate to find work. A lot of Irish emigrants hold high qualifications and want jobs relevant to their expertise. They certainly do not want to steal jobs from these 'foreigners', many of whom have been working here for the past number of years and do not deserve to be fired now that jobs are scarce.
