No fair hearing with Mr Harris

Sir -- In the light of the economic pain suffered by so many in Ireland today, I feel guilty at having to take issue with Eoghan Harris's piece 'FG and FF must unite to tackle public sector pay' (Sunday, October 3, 2010) -- yet compelled to do so I am.

As a primary-school teacher for the past six years, I would really love a breakdown of his figure of €962.14 being the 2009 public sector average weekly wage. I earn nowhere near this figure, even before taxes, and if anything, would feel aggrieved that my own salary was so far below the public sector average!

It's interesting that Mr Harris highlights the Dutch situation in his piece. I have just returned from two years' teaching in a state school in Holland. I earned substantially more than I do now in Ireland, my holidays were longer, my taxes afforded me far more entitlements than I receive here in Ireland and, in general, I got more value for my euro than I would ever get here.
