New Census jobs a mark of FF waste

The Central Statistics Office tells us nearly 450,000 people are on the live register as of February 2011. Yet, when it comes to hiring 4,800 people to take the upcoming Census, this state enterprise turned mainly to the comfortably retired; such as former bankers, gardai, and teachers, those seeking some diversion and a little extra cash to top up their pensions.

Hiring only unemployed individuals would have allowed our cash-strapped State to recoup money through deductions from social welfare payments during the period of employment, around €5m in total.

Yet many of these short-term appointments -- made days before the general election -- were used to supplement former civil servants and well-heeled pensioners.
