New body must maintain roads

I listened with disbelief to a recent morning radio interview with a councillor who was advocating that road maintenance responsibilities held by the National Roads Authority should be passed to county councils.

Given the track record of Meath County Council for planning infrastructure, I would say that the last thing we need is to give them more responsibilities.

I would suggest that if a county council has no expertise in planning and development, which includes road maintenance, then it should be abolished and a new body be established and staffed by people who are qualified to carry out their function.
