Never heard Irish in everyday life

WITH all the palaver about the Irish language (Kevin Myers, Irish Independent, February 23) can I, as an Englishman living in Ireland since 1972, state that I have never heard anybody in general everyday life use one single Irish word – not thank you, goodbye or anything.

I was brought up hearing another language, Yiddish, which we interspersed into our general everyday English.

We didn't learn the words at school; they were just generally used in the home and street.
