•The hearts and minds of Ireland will be in New Zealand tomorrow, our rugby heroes deserve all the plaudits they get but on the eve of the match we should spare a thought for the unsung custodian of our dreams.

In years to come he may be known as the Sphinx of Ballincollig, where he was born in 1959.

Practically since then, Declan Kidney has assumed the persona of the mysterious Egyptian statue, always quizzical and quietly impressive, as comfortable in the spotlight as languishing in the desert.
