Mr Myers is wrong on spendthrift Catholics

KEVIN Myers's article (Irish Independent, August 5) was most offensive. This frequent inference that Catholics are inherently corrupt spendthrifts is highly erroneous.

The first two European states to default on their debts were Iceland and Greece.

Iceland is predominantly Protestant and Greece is Eastern Orthodox (not Catholic, as Mr Myers seems to believe). Protestant Germany was among the first European states to break the Euro Growth and Stability Pact. So much for parsimonious Protestants.
