Moral monsters lack consistency

Sir -- You kindly published a letter of mine supporting David Norris's bid for the presidency. I had interviewed him for my book, The Irish Soul. After recent events, I would like to come to his defence once again.

I feel sickened that he has had to pull out. He did what any one of us would do -- plead for clemency for a very close friend who got himself into a spot of bother. Senator Norris's ex-partner had sexual relations with a boy just a few months shy of the legal age of 'consent'.

The fact that Gay Mitchell hasn't pulled out for his letter of clemency is mind-boggling. He wrote a letter on behalf of a convicted rapist and murderer, who shot an 18-year-old girl four times and raped her as she bled to death.
