Missionaries not to blame for famine

John Mulligan jumps on the present day 'bandwagon of anti- Catholic rhetoric' (Letters, July 30). The Catholic Church -- which includes missionaries -- teaches responsible parenthood.

Can Catholic missionaries be held responsible for 'persuading' the impoverished people of Somalia to have large families? I scarcely think so. A little research will throw up the reasons for the devastating famine now ravaging that country.
