Misleading figures in welfare article

THE article ‘Workers turn down €28,000 because they could get more on the dole' (Irish Independent, March 10) is the latest in an increasing number of attacks on social welfare recipients.
The figures quoted about the amount of money a family in receipt of social welfare receives per annum are incorrect. Why is a single individual with no children never used as part of these calculations?
The biggest canard propounded by these ‘on the hoof ' calculations centres around the rent supplement. It is not the case that everyone who applies for this supplement gets it.
