Memories of time in the Belgian Congo

I enclose a photograph of myself during my time in the Belgian Congo, taken around October 1960. I was with the 33rd Infantry Battalion, serving there from August 22 until January 20, 1961.

Eleven of our troops were killed by the Baluba tribesmen in the Niemba Ambush on November 8, 1960. I left the army in 1983, having served 28 years, and took up a job as civil defence officer in Limerick City for 26 years.

I retired from that position in 2009. I enjoyed my times both in the army and the city council.
