• Gabriel Byrne might have a rather negative view of the Irish tourism industry's prospects ('Nearly 60pc of diaspora in US plan to visit for Gathering', Irish Independent, December 17), but I wonder just what the 'Love/Hate' RTE programme has done to enhance future travel plans to our green and pleasant land?
I watched the final episode with friends who knew little of Ireland. Their perception of Ireland now is that the programme was more of a documentary, illustrating all that is bad in our capital, what with gang wars and drug dealer disputes.
The gratuitous violence on show – battles with AK-47s portraying, for example, the middle class streets of Portmarnock/Carrickmines, as a blood bath – shocked my friends. They now have an extremely tainted view of Ireland, with Dublin slipping well down the list of cities to visit for a future holiday.
