Love of country came before God

In response to Jessica Mullins (Letters, April 12), Markievicz is residually responsible for policies that flow from the narrow nationalism that she supported and for the glamorisation of violence by race and religion that helped Sinn Fein get 47.7pc of the votes cast in the 1918 election.

Where violence is glamorised the wise are rejected and the wild elected.

Markievicz supported Pearse who said, "Irish hate of the English" was a holy passion.
