Logging on to a brave new world
• A mind at peace is more innovative than one at war. For over half a century we attributed all our technological, mechanical and medical progress to experiences gained from two World Wars.
We believed the wars germinated ideas and inventions hitherto undreamed of, all because they led to the atomic bomb, nuclear power, Doodlebugs, more modern artillery, aircraft and submarines. These were products all designed or improved with one goal in mind -- mass destruction.
Tens of thousands of uneducated, underfed young Irish people fled our shores in the 1950s and 1960s in the hope of employment refurbishing the mess left by these wars. Many were inadequate at letter writing, while most never used a telephone, causing many to sever their connection with home.
