Local government needs real powers

I used to be greatly dismayed at the amount of locally elected officials here in France.

Every town and village elects their own council, consisting of a mayor and local councillors. One village that I know well, has a population of around 2,000 and has 19 elected officials.

In my home county, Offaly, there are only 21 councillors for a population of 70,000.
