Physicians healing themselves
I laud Health Minister James Reilly's wish to see the end of the Health Profession's Admission Test (HPAT) for those who want to study medicine (Irish Independent, February 18). The test is based on a number of significant confusions. Any person who believes that these tests are indicative of anything other than the capacity to do the test ought to see a doctor.
The test purports to reveal a wide range of relevant characteristics. It seeks to test the student's problem-solving skills, their non-verbal reasoning and their ability to understand the thoughts, behaviours and intentions of people.
