Let our planners sort out estates

Sir -- Regarding Brendan O'Connor's article (Sunday Independent, October 24, 2010), I have a suggestion regarding the 2,800 so-called 'ghost estates'. As Brendan stated, the Government is in the process of setting up yet another special task force of experts to deal with these empty houses. Well I suggest that this special task force be made up of all the planners in the county council offices, who can spend their own time righting their wrongs.
When individuals applied for planning to build a single house, we were treated like a piece of dirt. You would be forgiven for thinking that we had asked the planners for the funding to build the house.
Then we were told: "The house is too near the road" or "That window is too big." But do not worry, all you have to do is start from scratch and apply again. So we were sent packing to start the process again.
