Legislators must also heed the law

Sir -- Regarding PJ Sheehan (Sunday Independent, September 19), the behaviour and subsequent treatment of the good Cork deputy clearly illustrates the gulf that exists in this country between the legislator and ordinary citizen.
Ours is, in reality, a two-tier society: TDs and senators in the upper tier and the rest of us in the lower tier.
Had any of us been found intoxicated, in possession of a motor vehicle, and threatened a garda in early July, our case would already have been heard in court with the details splashed across some paper.
