Lebanon's press freer than Israel's

IN his light-humoured, but nevertheless prejudiced column about an Israeli underwear model, Ian O'Doherty refers to Israel as the only country in the region which can boast a free press (Irish Independent, January 20).
This is quite a bold comment to make, considering that Reporters Without Borders has ranked Israel in 93rd position in its World Press Freedom Index, far behind its neighbour Lebanon (ranked 61st).
And had he looked at the papers while writing his column Ian would have noticed this week's story about Jared Malsin, an American journalist who is being detained by Israel because of his work for an independent Palestinian newspaper.
