•If Education Minister Ruairi Quinn does not have figures on unqualified maths teachers, why does he not act on the figures he does have?
A breakdown of maths results by secondary school will quickly highlight schools with sub-standard teaching. High failure rates and low numbers attempting the honours paper would be 'key indicators'. This information is surely available, and could be acted upon immediately.
Furthermore, the focus on qualifications to the exclusion of competence is typical of the civil service: performance should be the indicator by which schools and teachers are judged.
