Leaders target of unjustified abuse

THE trivial talk that emphasises, for example, Enda Kenny's alleged 'Up Mayo' remark or Brian Cowen's alleged hangover to the exclusion of serious discussion on the many problems that this country has to face is nothing short of pathetic (Letters, October 4).
Personalised attacks on prominent politicians will do nothing to solve our real problems. Offensive depictions of Brian Cowen or invitations to commit suicide to Enda Kenny, both of which happened in the recent past, are outside the pale of acceptable discourse in a half-civilised society.
