Labour's abortion stance is not liberal
I had to laugh at David Quinn's description of Labour as pro-abortion (Irish Independent, February 11). Labour supports legal abortion where there is a threat to the woman's life or health or where the foetus cannot survive.
This would put it on the extreme right in almost any country in Europe. Even in the US, where the anti-abortion lobby is strong, only a minority would agree with Labour that a woman should not have the right to choose, even if she was raped.
That Labour's stance is somewhat "liberal" relative to other Irish parties shows how far to the right Ireland is on this issue, rather than showing a pro-abortion stance by Labour.
