Kerrigan wrong to support deal
Sir -- I admire Gene Kerrigan, but I was disappointed by his Soapbox article last Sunday dealing with the proposed Budget and economic statistics. He began his article by dismissing the major error of €3.6bn made by the Department of Finance, moving on to make fun of national and international financial commentators, except "a researcher with the Unite trade union''.
In his article of over 1,200 words he does not mention the Croke Park Agreement once. I know that Gene is a stalwart defender of public sector workers and their unions and has courageously taken on governments and big business, but in this instance he is wrong.
The new Government has very limited options in their upcoming Budget and they should tackle those at the top, including the public sector. But the Croke Park deal blocks any movement on pay, so with social welfare being the other big spender, the cuts will hit there.
