Junkets ... Tests ... One-party ... Appeal ... Unfair

Saturday August 22 2009

  • I was drawn to the headline 'St Patrick's Day trips hit in expenses crackdown' (Irish Independent, August 20) and I thought that perhaps, last March, politicans acted responsibly and stayed in Ireland working on Irish economic problems.

I was disappointed to read that, as unemployment began to take off, the political boyos recognised that it might be their last time abroad on a junket, pretending to be important.

At least they know that come the next election all the globe trotters will be gone, with time on their hands to do 'meet and greets' on their own time.

  • I believe the system for college entry would be improved if everyone sat a common set of aptitude tests.

Different faculties could decide the tests that were most important for their courses -- for example, mechanical reasoning and spatial ability for engineering. This might also reduce drop-out rates.

  • According to Dr Florence Craven (Letters, August 20), since the opposition has gone on holidays at the same time as the Government, "they really don't have any of the answers".

Time to officially declare the one-party state then?

  • Has no-one told ACC Bank that above the Supreme Court, we have the Very Supreme Court and possibly the Very Very Supreme Court ?

  • The recent results in the Leaving Cert show women have higher educational achievements than men. Yet the women of Ireland are not properly represented in leading positions in most sectors.

It is a sad reflection on our society.
