Is it time for Ireland's Kingdom come?

• I am sure I was not the only one to gaze on in envy last weekend at the unbridled spectacle that was the Diamond Jubilee celebrations on television.

While as an Irishman I was taught to shun all the pomp and opulence of monarchy, I could not help but feel comforted by the idea of having such an institution which is of great pride for so many British people.

The whole event left me feeling melancholic. While so many brave men gave their lives for the principles of a republic, can we truly admit that those principles still ring true, and would we be more at home with a constitutional monarchy of our own?
