Irresponsibility of road users
I regularly read of the road deaths in this country and the work that the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and others are doing to educate people to be safe on the roads. I wonder, though, what more needs to be done to eliminate the kind of suicidal behaviour I witnessed last Friday, when I was struck by the number of heads I could see in a small car.
At first count I thought it was six but on closer examination it could have been seven. Not one of the people in the car wore a seat belt. I observed a small child being handed from the lap of the front-seat passenger to a rear-seat passenger and another young child being passed up to the front.
Subsequently I had to overtake the car and observed a young girl no more than three years old standing in the footwell of the passenger seat, resting her chin on the dashboard.
