Irish in US avail of State pensions

Sir -- I refer to your 'Letter of the Week' (Sunday Independent, Oct 31, 2010), concerning Social Welfare ludicrous anomalies. I have an Irish friend in San Francisco and another in Los Angeles.
Both have Irish wives and, in similar circumstances each of the four has US Social Security pensions, pensions from their former employers and pensions from Irish social welfare. That is six pensions coming into each household and neither is reliant on these.
My San Francisco friend has not worked in Ireland since 1955 and friend in LA since 1963.
