While Brian O'Driscoll and the rest of the players did lift the country for a few weeks, especially with the win over Australia, they eventually ended up as failures, like in previous World Cups.
Let's call a spade a spade. There are only about eight strong rugby nations in the world -- the rest just make up the numbers every four years. Yet Ireland have repeatedly failed to finish in the last four of the tournament.
