Ireland's demise is a pitiful sight

I emigrated from Ireland 29 years ago when the country was in the midst of a savage recession. But the last few days have made me realise that things really weren't so bad, compared to what's happening now.

Ireland's financial problems have been making headlines from CNN to the 'New York Times' as the world waits to see what happens next.

Ireland and its people, from Barry McGuigan and Padraig Harrington in the sporting world, to Mary Robinson and John Hume in politics, have made me so proud through the years, as I boasted to my fellow New Yorkers about their achievements.
