Iran needs a nuclear defence

John Fitzgerald's childish analysis (Letters, September 7) of the Middle East called for our support for an Israeli "pre-emptive surgical air-strike" on Iran.

The notion that Iran, when in possession of a nuclear bomb, would launch a first strike against anyone is nothing other than ludicrous war-mongering.

The simple fact is that if Iran were to do that, it would receive an instant annihilation level retaliatory response from the West and indeed Russia and China might even be so spooked by such an event that they, too, would lend a hand in the slaughter.
