Invest in rail, not more motorways
THE 'Prime Time Investigates' programme on RTE (Monday, May 17) about the scandal of tyre dumping in Ireland showed that this is merely a symptom of our car addiction and of our road-dominated freight-transport system.
Over the years, we have seen the slow death of rail freight and a significant lack of investment in a proper and reliable public-transport system. Tentative efforts have been made but they have been abject in their outcomes.
In the meantime, and despite the fact that road-based private transport was becoming recognised as a global social and environmental problem, we have scarred our beautiful rural landscapes by building huge motorways.
