Integrated ticket should be simple

With regard to the debacle over the €50m that is expected to be paid for an 'integrated' transport ticketing system, it really makes one wonder who on earth we have in charge of policy in this country.
I started working on the buses in 1979 in Sunderland -- not the biggest metropolis in the world -- and 'integrated' ticketing was already in use.
Since the late 1990s, there has been a single ticket that can now be used on any bus company in the county of Tyne and Wear, the mainline train between Sunderland and Newcastle, the metro underground system, (yes, Tyne and Wear has one) and the ferry across the river Tyne between South Shields and North Shields.
