In the absence of a better alternative, we can always dream
The procrastination of our political leaders since the indecisive General Election result is causing unease and uncertainty amongst the ordinary people of Ireland. I am still hopeful of a positive outcome, as I had a dream last night that those who aspire to greatness are about to put the national interest before personal or party advantage.
I dreamed the leaders of the three biggest political parties had been meeting privately and were about to make a noble and patriotic gesture in this very special Easter week. In my dream, Gerry, Enda and Micheál were giving serious consideration to following the example of the first Roman Triumvirate, which was a political alliance between three prominent Roman leaders - Julius Caesar, Marcus Crassus and Pompey the Great. Their alliance was one of convenience to protect the might of the Roman Empire, even though all three were seeking personal advantage.
The alliance was never going to last indefinitely due to the ambitions, egos and jealousies of the three. Nevertheless, it enjoyed great success for about six years from 59BC to 53BC, which is longer than a Dáil term.
