In defence of the Angelus
Am I the only one who believes his comments are over the top?
He cites RTE guidelines, including: "There are Muslim, Hindu, Confucian and Jewish communities in Ireland as well as other religions that should be recognised and treated with respect."
Furthermore, the broadcaster should "cover the religions of new groups" as well as those "traditionally found in Ireland [plus] people who are agnostic or atheistic".
Is it being too pedantic to recall that we are talking about one minute of quiet during which a bell is rung, various non-sectarian scenes are shown, and we are all invited to reflect or pray for one minute?
'Gray's Elegy' speaks of the modern world "with its sick hurry and ignoble strife".
What would we gain by abolishing this moment of peace?
Would Pol like to tell us what could conceivably, in one minute, accomplish the entire agenda of the RTE?
"There is an offence that is given, and an offence that is not given but taken". Ponder this please, Pol -- perhaps at 6pm tonight.
